Spending President Obama's Broadband Stimulus
President Obama has proposed a $7.2B broadband stimulus as part of the much larger economic stimulus package.
This money is aimed at helping rural communities get either wireline or wireless Internet access, on par, or even better than the rest of the country.
This is an exciting prospect for the industry and rural America but there are many questions left unanswered:
- Just how big is the problem?
- How far will $7.2B go towards solving it?
- What technologies are most appropriate?
- What are the trade-offs between wire-line and wireless?
- What business models can be supported?
- How can business, institutional and residential needs be met?
- How can openness be preserved?
- What is the right mix of government, private equity and consumer spending?
How can policy makers, and more importantly, the small operators who will ultimately spend the stimulus money make the informed decisions necessary
to lay the groundwork for a broader broadband initiative?
